Steampunk Carnival Earrings by JLHilton
Steampunk Carnival Earrings
Designed and created in my private studio in 2013. Real watch gears. Purple Czech glass accents.
Dragonheart Necklace by JLHilton
Dragonheart Necklace

Lampwork glass heart handmade in the USA by my friend, glass artist Wendy Puckett. I put it on black leather cord, embellished with brass “pipe” beads. The pattern in the glass reminds me of dragon scales, but it could just as well be alien skin, if you’re into science fiction, or the melted relic of a failed time machine. The brass beads give it a bit of a steampunk flair.

Spacepunk Bracelet by JLHilton
Spacepunk Bracelet

My spacepunk jewelry is inspired by science fiction. Each piece is a unique combination of materials, designed to look as if it might have been created from bits of space debris, alien artifacts, hardware and spaceship parts, with a use of silver, nickel and gunmetal finishes — unlike steampunk’s brass and copper. Adornment is a human compulsion, older than history, and would certainly continue when we traveled to other worlds.

This bracelet features sparkling blue sun stone, amethyst, pressed iridescent Czech glass and metal beads, on thick gunmetal wire. Beads range in size from about 1/4-inc to 3/4-inch long.

Another picture of my handmade bracelet with coins, tokens, watch parts, a small key charm, a heart charm and a button. One of the coins says “3 pence 1935.” Two tokens say “Good for one fare,” and another “For amusement only.” The chain and key charm are new but the coins, watch parts and button were purchased from antique dealers. To the best of my knowledge they are real, not replicas like those sold in craft stores. The heart is from an older, broken piece of jewelry and I don’t know its origin or age.
In June, we celebrated my youngest daughter's 10th birthday and attended ConCarolinas, where we sat behind George R.R. Martin during opening ceremonies (not that he knew we were sitting behind him, we're not pals or anything, we just breathed the same air). I also worked as social media assistant for ConTemporal. You can see some of the photos in my gallery. In July, we celebrated my oldest daughter's 14th birthday.

While we took the summer off from homeschooling, I made a lot of jewelry. Nothing terribly exciting, just used up some of the odds and ends cluttering my studio. I started a new character in Skyrim, a Breton conjurer named Fleurine Greenhart, though I still played a little of my level 84 Imperial Nightingale rogue Zephyr Silvertongue and my level 58 Nord assassin Silvara.

No, I haven't finished writing the third Stellarnet book, and for all three people who've read the series, I apologize. I've found that, while I enjoy creating and writing stories, I really don't like being "an author." So, no deadlines for me. Let that be a lesson, kids, don't try to turn something you love into work. But I am still writing. In fact, I've been pretty excited about a fantasy novella I'm working on, featuring a dwarf as the love interest.

I'll be going to the Geek Gala in October. I'm also planning to sell jewelry at a small local event called Celtic Christmas in December and at Illogicon in January.

I saw your description and you reminded me a little bit of my daughter (yes, I'm OLD, I have a teenage daughter). :) She calls herself a "crazy old cat lady in training" and she likes video games and Tom Hiddleston. She likes to draw, mostly comics and illustrations, and she does "old lady crafts" (as she calls them) like cross-stitch and latch-hook. lol
